GhIG and UESD formally signed a Memorandum of Understanding

The Ghana Institute of Geoscientists (GhIG) and the University of Environment and
Sustainable Development (UESD) has formally signed a Memorandum of Understanding
(MoU) at the University Conference Room in Somanya. This MoU establishes the foundation
for collaboration between UESD and GhIG.
The primary objective of this Memorandum of Understanding is to bridge the gap between
academia and industry, as well as Civil Society Organizations. Such partnerships are vital in
advancing research, enhancing knowledge, and developing a skilled workforce. While the
industry typically concentrates on finding immediate, practical solutions, academia is
dedicated to creating new knowledge through research and educating the next
generation.
The synergy between these two entities can lead to accelerated innovation and contribute
to the sustainable development of Ghana. Detailed Articles of the MoU are outlined in the
attached document.

On , Monday, August 26, 2024, members of council lead by the President, Mr.
Crisler Akwei Ankrah and Mr. Augustine Appiah Boachie (Chairman of the Middle
belt) visited the University at Somanya for the formal and signing and handing over
of the MOU between the Ghana Institute of Geoscientists (GhIG) and the University
of Environment and Sustainability Development (UESD).
In attendance from the UESD were the Pro-Vice Chancellor, Prof Edward Wiafe
Debrah; Dr Hammond Oppong Kwarteng, Deputy Registrar; Dr Shine Francis

Remarks by UESD Pro. VC
The signing and official handing over of the Memorandum of
Understanding (MoU) between our institution and the partnering organization marks a
significant milestone. Although this MoU has been under discussion for over a year, we are
pleased to have reached this pivotal moment today.
The MoU is expected to foster a strong collaboration between both parties, with a primary
focus on enhancing the development and training of geoscience students. As part of our
future engagements, we will extend an invitation to the Institute to attend our maiden
graduation ceremony, scheduled for 23rd November 2024.
Additionally, we plan to submit sponsorship requests to the Ghana Institution of
Geoscientists (GhIG) for the Best Student Awards in the coming years. During the event, the
Pro-Vice-Chancellor highlighted that the first cohort of Earth Science students will be
enrolled at the University of Environment and Sustainable Development (UESD) in
September 2024.

Remarks by GhIG President
The signed agreement places significant emphasis on the promotion of geoscience among students, as well as career and professional development, through a robust collaboration between industry and academia. The Ghana Institution of Geoscientists (GhIG) is particularly enthusiastic about fostering this collaboration with the University of Environment and Sustainable Development (UESD).
After the signing ceremony, Mr. Ankrah, representing GhIG, stated that the Institute is fully prepared to connect UESD with key members from various producing mining companies. This initiative aims to facilitate early internship placements, providing students with real-time practical experience even before they complete their studies and enter the job market.
Additionally, the potential for adjunct lectureships was discussed. Industry professionals who are members of the Institute could be invited to lecture on specific subjects when UESD’s Geoscience programs commence in September 2024. This approach would ensure that students receive instruction from experts actively engaged in the field, further enhancing the quality of their education and their preparedness for professional careers in geoscience.
The President of GhIG expressed their willingness to consider such sponsorships. Indeed, GhIG has been actively sponsoring Best Student Awards at the University of Ghana’s Earth Science Department and the University of Mines & Technology’s Geological Engineering Department since 2016.
